EKET: The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media activist, Mr. Akaninyene Udo, popularly known as “AK Philo,” over allegations of circulating false security alerts on social media, which reportedly caused panic among residents of Eket and its environs.
According to police sources, the suspect was apprehended following investigations into a series of online posts and messages alleged to have contained unverified security information capable of inciting fear and public anxiety.
The police said the false alarms generated widespread concern among residents, prompting security agencies to verify the claims and assess their potential impact on public peace and safety.
Authorities maintained that the dissemination of misleading security information can undermine public confidence, create unnecessary panic, and divert the attention of security personnel from genuine threats.
The Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and warned members of the public against sharing unverified reports, especially on security-related matters. It urged citizens to rely on official channels for information and to exercise caution before reposting content on social media.
Police authorities further assured residents of Eket and other parts of the state that adequate measures remain in place to safeguard lives and property, stressing that anyone found deliberately spreading false information capable of disturbing public peace would face the full weight of the law.
The arrest has sparked discussions among residents and social media users on the responsibilities that accompany the use of digital platforms and the need for accurate information dissemination in matters affecting public security.
