The member representing Okobo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Bassey Plus Bassey, has reaffirmed his commitment to purposeful and people-centered representation.
Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo, where he presented his midterm legislative report, Hon. Bassey said his stewardship over the past two years has been anchored on inclusivity, accountability, and service.
He noted that consistent engagement with constituents has helped shape his legislative focus and interventions.
“My representation is service-driven. I have worked assiduously to address the needs and aspirations of my people. While it may not be perfect, it is sincere, inclusive, and purpose-driven,” he said.
The lawmaker listed key bills he has sponsored and co-sponsored, including the Bill to Regulate the Business of Scrap Metal Dealers and Similar Goods (HAB 367), which has passed second reading and is currently before the House Committee on Environment. Others include the Agricultural Loans Amendment Law, aimed at improving farmers’ access to credit and the Cultural Heritage Preservation Law, designed to protect historical sites and promote tourism.
As Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Hon. Bassey highlighted major oversight activities carried out under his leadership, such as oil spill remediation inspections in Eastern Obolo, ecological site assessments across the state, and flood control visits to affected areas in Uyo.
He added that the committee conducts monthly sanitation monitoring in partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) to uphold environmental and public health standards.
Beyond legislative work, Hon. Bassey emphasised human capital development through empowerment initiatives. He announced plans to distribute business grants to women and youths, vocational tools to artisans, and laptops to students before the end of the year.
“Empowerment should not just be about money but about providing tools for self-reliance,” he stressed.
Hon. Bassey commended Governor Umo Bassey Eno for his developmental strides under the ARISE Agenda, describing him as a visionary leader whose inclusive governance has inspired lawmakers to do more for their constituencies.
He also appreciated the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, and his colleagues for their cooperation and support.
He assured that more projects are underway in Okobo, including the Nsit Atai–Okobo–Oron Road and the construction of a Government Model Primary School, both aimed at improving living standards and promoting sustainable growth across the constituency.
At the event, Hon. Bassey donated laptops to four constituents and promised to extend the gesture to others in due course.
Reacting, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, commended Hon. Bassey for his performance and urged him to sustain the tempo while ensuring the inclusion of journalists from Okobo state constituency in future empowerment programmes.
The event was attended by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Media, Comrade Amos Etuk, Comrade Edet Okpo, members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Press Corps, newspaper and online publishers, and many others.
