The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has began full enforcement of the ban on all forms of covered vehicle number plates today.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, in a statement issued and signed yesterday, for the Commissioner of Police, stated that the enforcement exercise would apply to all categories of vehicles, including private, commercial, government-owned (state and federal), as well as those belonging to security agencies and Very Important Personalities.
According to her, the measure became necessary following observations that some individuals use vehicles with covered number plates to commit crimes and evade identification.
“The ban is crucial to the security of the state as it will enhance public safety, promote law and order, and strengthen the Command’s crime-fighting initiatives,” the release read in part.
The Command also explained that the ban prohibits the use of any material such as dark covers, plastic films, or fabrics, that makes number plates illegible. It also forbids the use of faded, dirty, or damaged plates, as well as the alteration of any character or the use of unauthorised or non-government issued number plates.
However, the Command warned that enforcement would be carried out “without fear or favour.” From the commencement date, any vehicle found violating the directive will be impounded immediately, and offenders will face penalties as stipulated by relevant traffic laws and regulations.
Motorists were given a grace period of 9th October, to remove any form of number plate cover and ensure that their plates are clean, legible, and compliant with government standards.
The police further appealed to vehicle owners, drivers, and aides of public office holders to comply strictly with the directive, stressing that the cooperation of the public is vital for the success of the initiative, which aims to improve safety across Akwa Ibom State.
The Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all residents of the state.
